Fleet Genius Review: Best Low-Cost GPS Fleet Tracking

Fleet Genius Review: Best Low-Cost GPS Fleet Tracking
Credit: Fleet Genius

We recommend Fleet Genius as the best low-cost GPS fleet tracking software for small businesses/best GPS fleet tracking software for very small businesses. We chose Fleet Genius from dozens of GPS fleet tracking software options. To understand how we chose Fleet Genius, you can find our methodology and a list of GPS fleet tracking software vendors on our best picks page.

Fleet Genius is our top pick because it offers a ton of features and flexibility, but also fits the small business budget. We also like that it can handle even the smallest of fleets and that the software is easy to use. It also comes with friendly, customer support through different channels.

Fleet Genius starts at $3.95 per month per vehicle. There are no long term contracts or hidden fees. A 15-day free trial is also available.

Fleet Genius offers some of the most flexible and feature-rich GPS fleet tracking plans at small business prices.

We particularly like that the company gives you a choice between three services and price points. If you just want to monitor vehicle conditions — such as maintenance issues and fuel management — the Fleet Genius Standard package is a software-only plan that costs $3.95 per vehicle per month. If you also need vehicle  on-board diagnostics (OBD-2) data, choose the Fleet Genius Export plan, which costs $7.95 per vehicle per month. To monitor both vehicles and drivers, check out the Fleet Genius Pro plan, which lets you generates extensive monitoring reports and comes with hardware that lets you track trips, driver safety and vehicle usage. Fleet Genius Pro costs $14.95 per vehicle per month, which is a steal compared to similar services that cost more than $20 per vehicle per month.

When we asked the company why their plans were cheaper and whether we would be sacrificing quality, we were told that they use local wireless systems instead of the cellular systems that are used by more expensive systems. This means there are no additional cellular subscriptions costs that are added into service.

Even better, this means that Fleet Genius doesn't require you to sign any cellular or service contracts, either. This is a breath of fresh air in an industry where long-term contracts that lock you in for up to 5 years is the norm. We also liked that there are no installation or other hidden fees, as there were with several vendors we researched.

If you'd like to give Fleet Genius a try, the company offers 15-day free trial, and it doesn't require a credit card. This is a great option if you wish to test the product (or GPS tracking software in general) without any commitments.

One of our favorite things about Fleet Genius is that it handles all fleet sizes, making it a suitable choice for very small businesses.

As a small business looking for a low-cost GPS fleet tracking solution, you likely don't have more than a handful of vehicles to track. Whereas most vendors require anywhere from 5-10 vehicles to start using the service, Fleet Genius doesn't have a minimum entry requirement. So whether you have one vehicle or a dozen, Fleet Genius is one of the few GPS fleet tracking systems that can work with very small businesses.

Many GPS fleet tracking software are too complex and technical to make them practical for most small business owners to use regularly. We like that Fleet Genius uses a very simple dashboard with easy navigation, so it's not difficult at all to figure out how to access and use different features.

The layout is also very clean and user-friendly, unlike other software, which is so cluttered and complicated that just watching a demo is enough to cause any small business owner anxiety. We're big fans of Fleet Genius's charts, big text and pictures.

The dashboard saves you time by highlighting alerts, maintenance issues, locations and other critical information so you don't have to waste time looking for it. There are also some very useful shortcuts, like the ability to quickly view specific vehicles and drivers, so you don’t have to manually use the search function or visit several pages to get to what you need.

Fleet Genius also makes it easy to get started. For small businesses that don't have the resources and tech skills, the company can install the hardware, set up the software and implement the entire system into your operations so you don't have to.

Fleet Genius is a complete, Web-based GPS fleet tracking system that comes with all the standard fleet tracking features and then some.

Here are the basic features that come with Fleet Genius:

  • Vehicle monitoring. Track locations, idle times, fuel economy, distances driven and how long each trip takes. You can also monitor vehicle conditions with Fleet Genius's diagnostics tool, which does everything maintenance-related, such as decode trouble codes, diagnose dashboard indicators and track emissions for greener fleet operations.
  • Driver monitoring. Keep an eye on driver behavior and performance. Track aggressive driving behaviors — like excessive speeding, rapid acceleration and fast braking — as well as idle durations, punctuality and in and out times. You can create individual driver profiles to track patterns over time to identify any issues and high-performing employees.
  • Alerts. Create custom alerts to automatically monitor vehicles and drivers. For instance, you can set real-time notifications for things like unsafe driving behaviors, when drivers go off-route, if a vehicle has been sitting idle for too long, check engine lights and other events.
  • Scheduling. In addition to scheduling trips, Fleet Genius also lets you manage maintenance calendars and set up reminders when services are due.
  • History log. The software automatically keeps maintenance, usage, alerts, tasks and other types of records so you can easily access them to view a vehicle's or diver's history.
  • Analytics. Identify trends and gain valuable insight using key performance indicators (KPIs) to see how your fleets are performing and whether any issues need to be addressed. KPIs include metrics like mileage, overall driving speeds, fuel economy, idle times and more. These also appear right on your dashboard for easy viewing right when you log in.
  • Mobile access. Use the software anytime, anywhere using your mobile Web browser on your smartphone or tablet. And unlike vendors that limit functions on mobile devices, Fleet Genius' Web-based software comes with all features, whether you are on your computer, tablet or mobile phone.

What really makes Fleet Genius stand out, however, is its flexibility, something competitors in this price range don't have. Fleet Genius offers custom features and services — which is typically only available with more expensive systems that are designed for enterprise-level fleet tracking — so you can build the perfect GPS fleet tracking software for your business. This includes:

  • Tailor-made software functions and hardware solutions based on your business's unique needs
  • Custom reports using your own set of metrics and data requirements
  • SDK and API tools (you'll have a to hire a developer for this one though)

Fleet Genius offers many resources to help you get started and troubleshoot problems. There are several ways to find the help you need:

  • Phone support using a toll-free number
  • Email support via the Web form
  • Live chat directly from the Fleet Genius website
  • By submitting a ticket to the helpdesk

For those who prefer to solve issues themselves, there is also a dedicated help page that contains a searchable database of articles and how-to guides.

We were also impressed that Fleet Genius offers support resources that are specifically built for small businesses. As mentioned above, the company offers installation and setup services, as well as custom feature implementation and training programs, which is perfect for small businesses that don't have the resources to do all of this themselves.

Our experience with Fleet Genius's customer support was very positive. We asked a multitude of questions as small business owners interested in using the software and the representative was eager and patient to answer and explain everything in detail. We also appreciate that it didn't feel like a sales call, whereas some vendors kept trying to either push the sale or set up demo appointments.

One of the biggest drawbacks to Fleet Genius is its customer support. Although there are several ways to reach the company, it doesn't mean that you can reach a live person at any time.

Unlike pricier services that offer 24/7 customer support, Fleet Genius's customer service and tech team are only available during regular business hours. So if your business operates on weekends or outside of the regular 9 to 5, you won't be able to speak with a representative until the next business day. This is a huge deal breaker if you prefer to deal with a company that you can reach immediately when something goes wrong, especially during emergencies.

Another limitation we came across is that Fleet Genius does not have its own mobile app. It's a strictly Web-based software, meaning you can only access it via your device's Web browser. The website is optimized for mobile use, but if you'd rather use a native app than your browser, Fleet Genius may not be for you. Instead, check out our review for GPSTrackIt, our top pick for the best GPS fleet tracking mobile app.
