OpenAI’s ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot taking the business world by storm. Many organizations of various sizes across a range of industries utilize this AI tool for content generation, customer communications, marketing and other functions. This tech trend has led to the rise of “prompt engineers,” or people who understand how to get the most out of OpenAI’s tool by inputting the right prompts.

It’s becoming crucial for business owners and job seekers to become proficient with ChatGPT. Here’s how to do it.

ChatGPT experience is becoming critical for job seekers

An survey found that 90 percent of hiring managers think ChatGPT experience will be essential in the future. And according to ResumeBuilder, about one-quarter of companies have already replaced employees with ChatGPT. In other words, people often fear that the AI tool may be coming for their jobs, performing tasks employers once delegated to full-time and part-time employees.

Although the chatbot is far from perfect — and business owners should be wary when relying on it for factual content — professionals should prioritize learning and strengthening ChatGPT skills. With many business leaders deeming ChatGPT experience a “beneficial skill” for employees, it’s crucial to have at least a basic understanding of how to use the chatbot.

ChatGPT is free to use and easy to learn. Including ChatGPT experience on your resume showcases your willingness to learn and hone new in-demand career skills — an attractive quality for any prospective employee.

How businesses can use ChatGPT

ChatGPT’s business uses are varied. Here are some of the most popular uses for the AI chatbot:

  • ChatGPT can create marketing content. Tell ChatGPT about your business, industry, products and services, and ask it to create marketing copy that draws in readers. Depending on your prompt, the AI tool can generate high-quality content for your business blog, social media captions, email newsletters and other marketing channels.
  • ChatGPT can draft summaries and reports. After taking notes during a meeting or client call, you can ask ChatGPT to summarize the information into an organized report. Or, if you’re researching a given topic and want to pull essential information from an article, ChatGPT can summarize an entire webpage in just a few seconds.
  • ChatGPT can outline posts. You don’t want to rely on ChatGPT to write an entire article or blog post for you because it has limitations, and readers can often detect the use of AI. However, you can ask the chatbot to outline an article so you can build from solid ground. For example, use a prompt that asks ChatGPT to outline an article about a specific topic. Ask it to include crucial keywords, focus ideas and data points so that you know exactly what to include. You can even ask it to scan competitors’ posts to ensure you’re not missing essential information that can be found elsewhere.
  • ChatGPT can identify search engine optimization (SEO) keywords for a particular topic. ChatGPT is excellent at identifying SEO-friendly keywords for a given subject. Ask the chatbot to spew out the top 10 keywords for the industry or topic at hand, and it will provide you with a reliable list that will support your marketing strategy. You can use these keywords for your social media posts, blog post titles and web copy to improve your company’s searchability.
  • ChatGPT can brainstorm creative ideas and solutions. ChatGPT makes a great brainstorming tool. If you run ideas or issues by the chatbot, it can help generate creative solutions or actionable tips to discuss with your team.
  • ChatGPT can deliver high-quality customer service. Use ChatGPT as a responsive chatbot for your website visitors to provide excellent customer service, or ask it to generate customer service emails to ensure you deliver high-quality support. This AI tool will help you provide more immediate assistance to customers and clients and free up time spent answering common questions. Additionally, ChatGPT provides more unique and personalized responses to inquiries than a typical chatbot, which often uses stock responses.
  • ChatGPT can explain complex topics. If you’re ever confused about a concept or industry jargon, ask ChatGPT to explain it in layperson’s terms so you understand it better. However, you’ll want to fact-check any information or data the AI tool generates, as its data runs back only to 2021.
  • ChatGPT can generate interview questions. ChatGPT is one of the ways AI is changing HR departments. During the hiring process, drafting interview questions can be time-consuming. ChatGPT can help you generate valuable questions within seconds. Provide details about the role from your job description to ensure you get the most detailed and relevant questions.
  • ChatGPT can assist with web development. ChatGPT has experience with coding and web development, and the chatbot can create stand-in webpages to help you find the best web design for your site.

Chatbots use complex machine learning techniques to sift through data, like books and news articles, and “learn” language.

How job candidates can gain experience with ChatGPT

Experience with ChatGPT is a must-have for all professionals, regardless of their industry. If you’re new to ChatGPT, here’s a step-by-step guide to using the system:

1. Open ChatGPT.

After you sign up for a free ChatGPT account, open a chat to input requests or prompts to generate feedback and content. Your screen will look like this:

2. Draft a prompt for your particular request.

You can ask specific questions, request a particular tone, and even refine your focus by engaging in back-and-forth conversations with the chatbot. For instance, when ChatGPT was asked to explain the concept of a “ChatGPT prompt” to someone new to the technology, this was the chatbot’s response:

If you don’t like the chatbot’s immediate response, you can ask a similar question with more detailed information or a different approach and reevaluate from there. Additionally, work with the content it generates instead of using it verbatim.

3. Experiment with different use cases.

As demonstrated above, there are various ways to use ChatGPT in business, such as generating marketing content and brainstorming business solutions. For example, if you want to generate web copy for a landing page, you can input a prompt like this: “Generate web copy for a content creation agency in the B2B sector.”

Here is ChatGPT’s response to that prompt:

You can personalize the content from there to ensure it suits your unique business and offerings.

Another example is to use ChatGPT to generate ideas for a marketing campaign. For this use case, consider inputting a prompt like this: “Generate a few marketing campaign ideas for a content creation agency in the B2B sector.” Here is ChatGPT’s response to that prompt:

Consider the above a “brainstorming session,” and involve your employees or partners to share their ideas.

Highlighting your ChatGPT experience and proficiency is ideal if you’re updating your resume to change careers.

Demonstrating your ChatGPT experience to your employer

Job candidates can demonstrate ChatGPT experience in many ways. For example, they can verbally share their knowledge and experience during a job interview, explaining specific prompts they’ve used and describing projects they’ve completed using the tool.

However, applicants should also list ChatGPT experience on their resumes and include it in their cover letters so employers know about it before the interview.

The future of ChatGPT

ChatGPT is a business trend that’s likely here to stay, so professionals should learn to work with the tool instead of rejecting or fearing it. While ChatGPT is a great chatbot with countless benefits, it won’t replace humans anytime soon. Instead of fearing for your job, find ways to utilize the AI tool to your advantage to strengthen your existing skills and showcase your adaptability with emerging tech.
