Leadership Lessons: Shape People's Careers and Make the World Better

There's no one "right" way to lead a business. Today's leaders have a lot of wisdom to impart about managing the modern workforce, because each one approaches leadership in his or her own unique way. Every week, Business News Daily will share a leadership lesson from a successful business owner or executive.

Growing up, it became a family inside joke that whatever sports team I participated in, I always won the Most Improved Player Award. It used to really bother me, but now, I see that as an indication that I was an entrepreneur from an early age. I would figure out what position the team needed the most and focus my efforts on honing that skillset, as well as being open and excited about feedback and coaching. 

I am still that way. I really want to be the best CEO and business leader I can be – from both a revenue standpoint, but also, from a professional growth and milestone standpoint.  I want to feel proud about the work I am doing and the difference I am making in the community. These attributes are what drive me as a leader.

Before starting EvolveMKD, I had been working at a boutique NYC agency for about five years, having served first as its EVP, and then its president and business partner of the founder. About six months into our partnership, it became clear it wasn't going to work out for the long-term. During the next few months of negotiating for my exit, I was left with time to really think through what I wanted to do as a next step in my career.

I looked around the industry and realized that no agency was offering the senior-level, hands-on, personalized attention in the healthcare and beauty space. Nor was there one that was owned, run, and staffed entirely by women. I thought this was an opportunity to try an experiment in both client service and employee retention, by focusing on senior level staff first, and combining that with a flexibility and healthy working environment that is not a mainstay in the public relations world. 

One of my goals in establishing Evolve was to create a setting in which women could feel safe not only to work and thrive. By design, Evolve is an open office that encourages the free flow of communication among staff. Our space has a unique feminine vibe that invites collaboration and creativity. I want everyone to see themselves as an integral part of a team and be a part of that team's success. That's why we operate in a wide-open bullpen, and everyone can approach anyone else directly with information, questions, or concerns.

My biggest leadership lesson has been to encourage women to define what they want from their job and prepare for the next step in their career. At the end of the day, I want to ensure all of my employees are challenged to meet their own potential.
