InTouch GPS Review: Best GPS Fleet Tracking for Business

InTouch GPS Review: Best GPS Fleet Tracking for Business
Credit: InTouch GPS

Our 2018 research and analysis of GPS fleet tracking software leads us to again recommend InTouch GPS as the best GPS fleet tracking software for small businesses. We chose InTouch GPS from dozens of GPS fleet-tracking software options. To understand how we chose InTouch GPS, you can find our methodology and a list of GPS fleet-tracking software vendors on our best picks page.

InTouch GPS is our top pick for the best GPS fleet-tracking software for small business because it offers the best pricing, is easy to use and comes with a ton of time-saving features that simplify monitoring vehicles and drivers.

InTouch GPS costs $23.95 per month and comes with free hardware. There are also no long-term contracts or minimum number of vehicles, making it an excellent choice for small businesses. There are no installation fees, maintenance fees or other hidden costs, and pricing includes U.S.-based phone support.

Most GPS fleet-tracking software products aren't cheap. In addition to monthly service fees, many vendors charge extra for certain features, setup and even customer support. Some vendors are also resellers that mark up the software, piling on fees and additional charges. InTouch GPS, however, is a direct seller that offers transparent, affordable pricing that won't break the small business budget.

We like that InTouch GPS has a flat monthly fee of $23.95 per month. This means there are no installation fees, maintenance fees or other hidden costs, and includes phone support. Even better, InTouch GPS doesn't require any long-term contracts, which earns them major bonus points from us. Unlike many of its competitors, InTouch GPS won't force you into a multiyear service (some vendors lock you down for up to five years!) that includes hefty early-termination and restocking fees. We also like that there is a money-back guarantee with its 30-day free trial, which also doesn't have any restocking fees.

What we're not a fan of is the one-time $20 hardware activation fee, and that InTouch GPS requires first and last month's payment upfront. Nonetheless, we like that InTouch GPS makes this information clear and doesn't bury it in the fine print, so there won't be any surprises when you get your bill.

Of the GPS fleet-tracking software we considered, InTouch GPS has one of the easiest user interfaces around. This is because it uses a very simple menu system that organizes each section into easily recognizable tabs:  Locations, Dashboard, Reports, Drivers, Maintenance and Scorecard. This makes it easy to navigate the software and quickly get to the function you need.

Each section is self-explanatory, but InTouch GPS does get a bit more challenging once you start using more advanced features, such as geofencing, dispatching and generating reports. We had no idea how to even approach these features, but after watching brief step-by-step tutorial videos, it was actually much easier than we thought it would be, and it became clear how intuitive the process and each step actually is.

Installing the device is also easy. InTouch GPS gives you the option of using plug-and-play hardware that you simply plug into a port in the vehicles you wish to track. It will automatically connect to the software and start transmitting data within minutes of installation.

InTouch GPS is packed with a complete set of features that make it easy to track vehicles, vehicle conditions and drivers:

24/7 tracking. Keep an eye on vehicles around the clock. InTouch GPS gives you access to live view of vehicles and vehicle data regardless of the day or hour, so you'll know exactly where your vehicles are and what they are doing at any time.

Google Maps integration. InTouch GPS uses enterprise-level Google Maps technology, so you get the most accurate locations, routes and traffic data available.

Locator and dispatching. Easily find and contact vehicles from your dashboard. For instance, just input an address and you can find the nearest vehicle available to take on a job. This feature also helps you reroute vehicles as necessary and inform drivers of any urgent changes.

Customized alerts. Monitor your fleets even when you're not using the software. InTouch GPS lets you set up custom email and text alerts for a wide range of events, so you'll know what's going on anytime. Real-time alerts include:

  • Bad driver behavior, such as speeding, excessive idling and going off-route.
  • Maintenance reminders at specific mileage or dates.
  • Geofencing and landmark notifications.
  • When reports are created and sent.
  • Driver arrivals and departures or when they start and end their shifts.
  • ETA changes or when a driver is running late due to traffic or other circumstances.

We also like that you can set specific alerts for different vehicles and drivers, then send them to multiple recipients.

On-demand ETA. Enter a vehicle's end point in the "Destinations" feature and InTouch GPS will automatically update ETAs until the driver arrives. This both locates and tracks vehicles in real time for more accurate ETAs and faster response times to client or customer inquiries.

Mobile app. Track vehicles and drivers wherever you are. InTouch GPS offers both an iOS and Android mobile app for on-the-go access to vehicle and driver data. Features available include live views, vehicle status, alerts, reports, vehicle locators and more.

Analytics. Cut costs, identify problem areas and create more efficient fleets with analytics. InTouch GPS lets you generate all types of vehicle and driver reports, including custom reports based on your business's unique needs.

Automation. Save time by automatically generating all types of reports when and how you want them. Reports can be created at any frequency, whether you want them daily, once a week or once a month. They are automatically sent to your email or to multiple recipients based on their departments and roles.

Maintenance scheduling. Stay on top of vehicle maintenance and prevent costly repairs with automatic tracking. This feature sends notifications when it's almost time for a service or when service is past due, so there are no surprises and you can prepare accordingly.

Driver scorecards. Create driver profiles and compare their performance with other drivers. You can rate drivers based on safety, work completion and other metrics to identify top performers, issues that need to be addressed and where there is room for training.

Many GPS fleet-tracking software providers don't provide adequate customer support. Some only offer one way to contact customer service and tech support, while others charge extra.

InTouch GPS comes with U.S.-based phone support, as well as live chat and email support. This is all included in the monthly fee, so you don't have to pay a premium just to reach a live person when you need help.

We were impressed that we were able to immediately reach a representative — we reached out to the company as small business owners shopping around for GPS tracking software and asked a multitude of questions about their service. The representative eagerly answered all of our questions and it didn't feel like a sales call, whereas other vendors we called kept trying to push the sale. The representative was more focused on helping us figure out whether InTouch GPS was the right one for us and even showed us where to find resources to further evaluate the service before making a decision.

If you prefer to learn more about the software or troubleshoot issues on your own, InTouch GPS comes with a wide range of support materials to get you started. These include:

  • A buyer's guide.
  • How-to guides.
  • Dozens of step-by-step video tutorials.
  • Hardware and software documentation.
  • FAQ section.

Lastly, we like that InTouch GPS offers on-going training, so someone is always there to help you get started and get the most of the software. Training classes are also available via InTouch University, which is free.

Although InTouch GPS is our top pick for the best GPS fleet-tracking software for small business, it does have its drawbacks. The biggest limitation we found is that customer service and tech support only operate during business hours. Specifically, InTouch GPS is only open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern time. This is a huge drawback if your business operates outside of or beyond those hours (or if you're on the West Coast) because if you need help or have an emergency, you'll likely have to wait until the next business day for assistance.

Another drawback to using InTouch GPS is that there are several hardware and service options, so it can be overwhelming trying to figure out which combination is right for your business. There are also different equipment and separate plans for asset tracking — such as trailers and other non-vehicles — which makes the service even more confusing for small business owners. A brief conversation with an InTouch GPS representative can guide you in the right direction, but the decision is ultimately up to you.
