It's hard to keep track of all the features Salesforce has, because in recent years, the software behemoth has swallowed up smaller companies like the SaaS world is an all-you-can-eat buffet. In 2016, the CRM giant purchased Quip, and since then, Salesforce has gradually built it out. Initially, people were skeptical of the move because Quip wasn't built with customer service in mind, but rather as an internal productivity and collaboration tool. However, Salesforce's investment in Quip appears to have been a smart move.
Improving internal efficiency and communication can translate to better customer service for clients, so even if your aim is to use Salesforce for customer-facing benefits, checking out Quip's functionality is worthwhile. Quip can also be purchased as a stand-alone product for non-Salesforce customers. Here's what it does.
Quip started as a document management system that offered users the ability to collaborate on documents in real time by adding comments, editing and chatting. These features are still part of Quip, but it does a lot more than that now. In Quip, the document you see is always the latest version, making it a great tool for businesses that rely on collaboration and frequently revise multiple drafts of a project. Quip works with images too, making it easy for multiple users to give feedback on designs.
You can even poll other team members on the direction of the project, and since Quip is mobile friendly, it works well for remote teams and frequent business travelers who need to weigh in on projects while in transit.

Live Apps in Quip
Live Apps are the tools that live in Quip and add project planning and collaborative functionality to each project. With Live Apps, you can communicate the status of a workflow, adding information like who "owns" the project, who the workflow approvers are, and when the last update was posted. Users who are all on the same project can use the workflow app to access a shared calendar and/or live Kanban board. Within Quip Live Apps, you can @mention team members, link to documents, assign due dates, set action items and access live chat features.
Jira integrates with Quip too. If your team uses Jira, you can pull in Jira tickets and use Quip to collaborate on them with other team members or even create a new workflow using Lucidchart, which also integrates with Quip.
Functionality with Salesforce
Naturally, integration with Salesforce is a major selling point for current CRM users to take advantage of everything Quip offers. Thanks to the acquisition, it's simple to import reports from Salesforce into a Quip spreadsheet.
Quip spreadsheets have many built-in filters (similar to Excel table filters). You can then add that filtered data into a Quip document to share it with your team. While you can also export reports from Salesforce into Excel, those reports won't update automatically, since Excel doesn't fully integrate with the CRM.
Spreadsheets in Quip, however, will update automatically to reflect the live data in Salesforce. Quip documents can also be loaded into Salesforce records, which enables users to maintain campaigns and opportunities in Salesforce while keeping the coinciding Quip documents accessible from the same screen.
Since Salesforce and Quip sync, users can also do things like add live Salesforce record data to an account plan. It's a two-way street: If you alter client data in your Quip document and click Save to Salesforce, the changes automatically appear in both locations. This is a huge bonus for SMBs wanting to eliminate duplicate entry processes and minimize errors that result from entering the same information multiple times.
Slides and Advanced Search
Quip is consistently adding functionality to offer both Quip and Salesforce users a better collaborative experience. The newest additions to Quip's arsenal include Slides and Advanced Search.
The Slides feature merges the classic collaborative aspects of Quip with a PowerPoint-style slide presentation format that's ideal for in-house meetings and brainstorming sessions. While some industry pros think Salesforce is positioning Quip Slides to compete with PowerPoint, it's clear from the interface and feature set that it's intended for internal use, at least for now.
Remote teams and groups wanting to reduce or eliminate the number of conference room-style meetings will appreciate the way users in Slides can chat about the specific slide they're seeing, co-edit the slides in real time, and interact through @mentioning and polls. Additionally, charts and tables that are inserted into the slides reflect live data from Salesforce, so there's no need to constantly create updated versions of the same data.
Finding specific projects in document management systems can be challenging, but Quip makes it easier with the Advanced Search function. Not only can you search via keyword or document name, but you can filter your search based on when the document was created, who created it, who modified it and even when it was last opened.
Quip looks like a great addition for Salesforce users who struggle with document management and/or want a collaboration tool that makes it easy to get things done, especially if your team is remote. Additionally, Quip customer service is extremely efficient and quick to respond to both general and technical inquiries, and the online documentation makes it easy to get started.
