A Business News Daily Review

After conducting research and analysis of medical billing services, we recommend Human Medical Billing as the best flexible medical billing service.

We chose Human Medical Billing from a pool of dozens of medical billing services. To learn more about our full methodology and for a more comprehensive list of medical billing companies, see Business News Daily's best picks.

Outsourcing your medical billing requires a great deal of trust. After all, you are entrusting your medical practice's entire revenue cycle management to a third party. The financial health of your business is at stake if the company doesn't deliver the quality service it promises. Unfortunately, most medical billing services require you to sign an annual contract; some companies even require you to agree to multiple years of service when you sign. If you find out that service is not up to the standards you expected, you might have to suffer under contract for at least a year while your practice's finances remain out of your control.

Human Medical Billing is a small medical billing service that checks all the major boxes. It maintains certified coders on staff, offers fair pricing based on industry standards, doesn't charge any additional fees beyond its monthly percentage, and provides you a dedicated account manager. If Human Medical Billing doesn't satisfy, it allows you to cancel your service with just 30 days' notice, which is rare amongst the companies we reviewed. Finally, Human Medical Billing works with whatever software your practice currently uses, meaning you won't have to change practice management software if you're already using a particular solution.

Human Medical Billing has a unique process that involves a committee-style system. Small groups of staff are laser-focused on tackling one part of the billing process: You have a set of certified coders working on coding, a set of human claim-scrubbers reviewing claims for errors prior to submission, and specialty staff who understand the intricacies of billing for certain niches.

Once a claim has been created through this system, it is reviewed by the staff and also scrubbed by Human Medical Billing's software. Once finished, claims are submitted to the appropriate payer. Human Medical Billing will follow up on unpaid or rejected claims, rectify whatever issues it can, and resubmit the claim to the payer in hopes that it is accepted.

Human Medical Billing's estimated pricing is right in the middle of the average range for companies in our review. The company charges a maximum of 6 percent; however, the number could be lower, depending on the specifics of your practice – size, volume, collections, etc. It also institutes a monthly minimum of $500. Beyond that, there are no fees for setup, implementation or insurance provider credentialing. Everything is included. The provider credentialing process, in particular, can take weeks, so having it taken off your shoulders for no additional cost is an attractive service.

When you contract with Human Medical Billing, you'll be assigned a dedicated account manager. You will be given a cell phone number for that account manager, who will be your liaison for any concerns or questions. Human Medical Billing is a small company with just three account managers on staff, but the account managers can call, text or email you at any time.

Our customer service experience with Human Medical Billing was very positive, with one caveat. When we initially tried to contact support through the live chat feature on the website, it was unresponsive. However, in our multiple follow-up calls with different representatives, we were given extensive attention and thorough answers to all our questions. It was apparent that Human Medical Billing was a very small company, given the somewhat unpolished nature of our customer service experience, but that can be a positive. We felt more attended to than we did with larger companies in our review, and we never once felt any pushiness to make a sale. It was a friendly, informative and satisfying experience all around.

Human Medical Billing does quite a bit for its size, but the fact remains that it is a very small company. You won't have access to some of the bells and whistles that larger companies offer. Our customer service experience was very positive, but one representative said there are only three dedicated account managers on staff, so it's worth considering that you might run into difficulty contacting a liaison in a timely manner. However, Human Medical Billing uses its small size to its advantage by running an efficient committee-style billing system and granting you highly personalized attention.
