For editors, project leaders and other managers, managing freelancers who are all working on different projects simultaneously can be a job unto itself. A lot goes into it – assigning projects or stories, managing the production process, issuing payment, communicating project changes, the list can go on and on. Plus, spending too much time organizing and overseeing freelance work can take away from other responsibilities to other areas of the company.

To effectively manage, you probably rely on tech tools to streamline the production process. That way you don't waste time trying to constantly catch up with your team, understand who needs to be paid when and decide what assignments still need to be completed. Here are five great programs for managing freelancers.

Freedcamp

Freedcamp acts as a project management tool that can work well for organizing and managing freelancers. By providing task lists, project boards and a calendar, Freedcamp has the features to keep all your freelancers' information in one area. The program does not feature the same kind of freelancer payment system as Kalo or Shortlist. Freedcamp is, however, completely free. For startups or new companies looking to save money, Freedcamp could be a good option despite lacking a payment system.

Shortlist

Shortlist also offers a simple way to track and manage freelancers and their projects. In addition to freelancer payment systems and project management, Shortlist offers automated onboarding and workforce analytics. This can further streamline adding new freelancers to your team as well as provide you with a bird's-eye view of how things are progressing with each employee.

Shortlist offers both a simple and professional plan for businesses. Both require working with the company to develop a plan specifically tailored for your business.

Kalo

Created by a former Google design lead, Kalo is built for managers who have a wide array of freelancers they need to manage while fulfilling other responsibilities for their company. The program integrates all your freelancer information into one place. You can view a complete list of their responsibilities. You also can add assignments, manage contracts, view budgets, issue and receive feedback, and complete payments. Kalo offers a free service with all its features except for freelancer payment and custom reporting. For premium access, teams can contact Kalo directly for a price tailored specifically for their needs.

BetterWorks

BetterWorks is management software that can be used to integrate goal setting, progress check-ins, peer feedback and performance reviews. This can be a good option for managers looking to set specific goals with freelancers and get feedback once projects are complete. This system is fully available on mobile devices, making it a great way for freelancers to stay up to date with goals and feedback.

Doodle

Doodle is a good tool for scheduling a meeting with multiple people without having to individually contact and discuss what day and time works best for everyone. If you need to talk with or meet with a group of freelancers – or connect two freelancers working on similar projects – Doodle makes it easy to streamline everyone's input and pick the right meeting time.

Patricia Suflita Wilson, CEO of P.S. Think Big and former CEO of Make-A-Wish San Francisco, uses Doodle to schedule meetings with her remote team. "Doodle creates an easy selection of dates from which you can quickly indicate what your schedule allows," she said. "Based on your IP address (or your account settings that can be manually overridden), it adjusts for your time zone. Time zone changes and daylight saving time are, surprisingly, one of the bigger challenges in scheduling appointments with remote teams."
