Small Business Snapshot: Bonding Bees

Small Business Snapshot: Bonding Bees Credit: Bonding Bees

Our Small Business Snapshot series features photos that represent, in just one image, what the small businesses we feature are all about. Kayla Pickana, founder and CEO of Bonding Bees, explains how this image represents her business.

Bonding Bees is a subscription box business that delivers everything needed for a fun and creative date night right from home. The goal is to help couples keep their relationships a priority without letting anything get in the way.

These days, everyone has such little time. For couples working full time, by the time they get off work, the last thing they want to do is plan a new and unique date night. It usually ends up being, "What do you wanna do tonight?" "I don't care, what do you wanna do?" And then they settle for dinner or a movie. For parents, it's hard enough to even find a babysitter and make it out of the house for alone time, and once the kids go to bed they usually just turn on Netflix.

I've experienced these issues with my own relationships. In fact, I was married for a short time. We got way too comfortable early on and before we were even married, he was downstairs in his "man cave" watching sports and I was upstairs watching "The Bachelor." If we did go out, it would be to one of two places, ordering the same thing, each on our phone, so disconnected. When we were on our honeymoon sleeping in different beds, that's when I knew it would be like this the rest of my life. Unfortunately for us, this went on for too long and we grew too far apart, so we went our separate ways.

That was a hard decision, and I made a promise to myself to treat my next relationship completely different. I recently moved in with my current boyfriend and it's been so different from anything I've ever experienced, and I'd say the No. 1 reason is that we are always fully engaged with one another. We hardly watch TV, we turn phones off when its "us time" and we are always trying and doing new things. That's what inspired Bonding Bees.

It will be a challenge as we grow to help couples rethink how they spend their time together and be willing to try something new. Also, I put a lot of thought into every box to try and make it perfect, but long-term it will be a challenge to make it a great fit for everyone. My plan is to eventually make the boxes more customized to try and fit each couple's personality and interests as best as I can. I have long term goals to even expand to family bonding boxes, business team building boxes, and more!

I'm so passionate about love, but I've witnessed first hand how easy it is to let it fall apart. My hope is that Bonding Bees can help couples stay engaged, learn more about one another, experience new things together, and just have some fun, all with the convenience of being right at home. The above picture shows my boyfriend and I doing a date night box ourselves. We really enjoy doing the boxes together, and I love getting pictures like this from customers, just enjoying each other's time, learning something new, and having fun together, all thanks to Bonding Bees.
