Our Small Business Snapshot series features photos that represent, in just one image, what the small businesses we feature are all about. Regina Gaines, co-owner and managing partner of House of Pure Vin, explains how this image represents her business.
House of Pure Vin is a signature retail destination for wine lovers and future connoisseurs to learn, experience and acquire a taste of wines from around the world, with an emphasis on Michigan wines.
Our business was started because we wanted to participate in the revitalization of Detroit and the emergence of the Michigan economy. Michigan is the fifth-largest grape production state in the nation and the home of more than 170 wineries and vineyards in the state. This industry represents close to 600 million dollars in revenues and 20 million in tourism annually. My partners and I thought it was a great opportunity to capitalize on this by creating our specialty wine store and tasting room.
The biggest challenges our business faces are simply being part of the first of our kind. The street could be lonely, and our store had to do a lot of things to drive traffic. However, we have excellent landlords and corporate partnerships. Traffic is increasing and our store is continuously being surrounded by new tenants, which is producing a new uptick in sales every day. We are simply taking it one step at a time.
