With the holiday season upon us, hiring for seasonal jobs is well underway. Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that over the past three decades, November and December are the two most active hiring months of the year for such jobs.
New research from CareerCast finds that jobs in the retail industry have the most vacancies right now. Specifically, approximately 4,500 retail job openings are listed on the CareerCast site. The job search website shows that there are also a large number of openings for customer service and hospitality workers.
Many of the jobs, however, aren't front-line positions. Out of the top eight jobs, three of this year's most in-demand seasonal jobs are management positions. Kyle Kensing, online content editor at CareerCast, said that this is being driven by the need for additional supervisors to be in charge of all of the new staff that's being hired for lower-level jobs. "The prominence of managerial positions can be attributed directly to the high volume of entry-level positions hired this time of year," Kensing told Business News Daily. "These positions help mitigate the responsibilities on existing management."
According to CareerCast, this year's eight most in-demand seasonal jobs, and their median annual salaries, are:
- Delivery trick driver: $27,750
- First-line supervisor: $38,310
- Lodging manager: $49,720
- Performer: $18.80 (hourly)
- Recreational worker: $23,320
- Sales manager: $113,860
- Tax preparer: $36,450
- Warehouse worker: $23,090
The positions on this year's list are a combination of those jobs that are listed in CareerCast's annual Jobs Rated report that are historically sought after at this time of year, and those jobs in the CareerCast database with the highest rate of seasonal positions available.
Kensing said that some people might be surprised to see a job like tax preparer on this year's list.
"As consumers spend more this time of year, the increase in revenue oftentimes requires additional support managing the books," Kensing said. "Tax preparer may not be the job one equates with the holidays, but it is a popular listing in the CareerCast database for employers seeking seasonal help."
While some job seekers might consider seasonal jobs as only temporary positions, a number of those positions end up turning into full-time jobs, according to Kensing. He said that some data shows that as many as one-quarter of all seasonal hires are kept on as full-time staff.
Kensing said that the best way for a person who is hired as a seasonal worker to parlay their job into something more long term is to treat it like a full-time job.
"That means, approach the duties with the same vigor you would a permanent position, and not just do the bare minimum asked," Kensing said. "Show initiative by asking what other roles in the organization you could do, or ask for tips to master the position held. In that same vein, make yourself known to your temporary employer."
