Leadership Lessons: Let Everyone Know They're Important

Leadership Lessons: Let Everyone Know They're Important

There's no one "right" way to lead a business. Today's leaders have a lot of wisdom to impart about managing the modern workforce, because each one approaches leadership in his or her own unique way. Every week, Business News Daily will share a leadership lesson from a successful business owner or executive.

  • The leader: Mark Clayton, founder & president of LIVV Headphones and former NFL wide receiver
  • Time in current position: 3 years
  • Mark's philosophy: "Teamwork makes the dream work! Everybody's part is important; let them know that, and not just once." (Click to tweet)

My faith, family, coaches, partners and failures have all played a role in mentoring and helping me through every stage of life. I've had the pleasure of coming across some great leaders that had X-ray vision. They saw so much more in me than what was on the surface. My high school coach and college coaches at Oklahoma were great visionaries. The way they believed in me has made a lasting impact and they've compelled me to keep going and enjoy the ride, whether good or bad. My faith and family have taught me what being committed to something and finishing is all about.

I believe as a leader it's very inspiring to your team, whether on the football field or in business, to show and share the level of commitment not only to the business at hand but to them as a partner and person. A philosophy I truly believe in is that standards are to be set very high and the expectation is you do your absolute best. We are not perfect and I don't expect anyone to be. Most importantly, people aren't working for you; they're working with you to make a change and to have an impact on this earth.

There's no specific roadmap for NFL players after football, and many retired players are lost without the game. I started LIVV because I wanted to follow my passion for music and engineering and share it with the world. It could have never been done alone. My goal is to inspire others to strive for greatness and become the best version of themselves.
