Our Small Business Snapshot series features photos that represent, in just one image, what the small businesses we feature are all about. Constanzo Canfora, general manager of Canfora, explains how this image represents his family's 70-year-old handmade sandal business.
In 1946, the island Capri was inundated with travelers arriving from every corner of the globe: royals, artists, intellectuals, and actors. My grandfather, Amedeo Canfora, decided to open a sandal shop — a modest little shop, with a workbench on which to make his sandals, walls where soles and costume jewelry hung and shelves holding books for recording purposes. Within no time, word spread to the mainland, attracting famous clients like Princess Margaret, Grace Kelly and Jackie Kennedy.
Canfora, the original Capri sandal, still designs its handmade sandals in Capri, Italy and ships them anywhere around the world. We produce each pair entirely by hand in the company's workshop and store on the historic Via Camerelle. All materials are Italian-made from the jewelry to the leather, and all sandals are made to order in just one day. We introduce new styles every season and continue with classic styles that are part of our permanent collection.
Starting with the sole, made with various layers of Italian leather that are pressed and sewn together, we design our sandals unlike any other. The traditional Capri sandal is almost flat: ideal for walking up and down the steep lanes of Capri and, above all, supremely comfortable and resistant.
From the beginning of our company, my grandfather always pushed himself and the people working with him to make the best products in terms of quality and design. We love that people know that every pair of sandals is handmade. We have a personal relationship with every customer waiting for their sandals.
