Our Small Business Snapshot series features photos that represent, in just one image, what the small businesses we feature are all about. Mike Schultz, founder of BioDapt, a company that creates performance prosthetics and adaptive equipment, explains how this image represents his business.
I'm a professional snocross athlete. In 2008, I had an accident on my sled, which cost me my leg above the knee. Shortly after my accident, I was ready to get back to competing, but the everyday prosthetic was not cutting it for what my body could handle as an action sports professional athlete. I have always been a mechanical thinker and a problem solver, and I realized, what better project to work on than my own leg.
Seven months after my accident, I competed on the national stage at ESPN's X Games (an event I had competed in as an abled athlete), and won a silver medal in the Adaptive Motocross event. It was at that moment I realized I could be instrumental in the development and advancements of high impact adaptive sports prosthetics. In 2010, I started BioDapt, which makes prosthetics for action sport athletes and wounded soldiers.
Our primary goal at BioDapt, Inc. is to produce lower limb performance prosthetic equipment that helps amputees live a more active and healthy lifestyle. We engineer and manufacture a versatile and mechanical knee known as the "Moto Knee." It uses a patented linkage system and a FOX mountain bike shock that can absorb the rigorous activity and competitiveness of action sports. In 2013, we added the "Versa Foot" to our collection, which was named one of the Top 10 Inventions of 2013 by Popular Science Magazine.
One of the biggest challenges I face with running BioDapt is how to efficiently create top notch products and market them to as many potential clients as possible. Going forward, we hope to develop several more products for a wider range of activities. I like having a small "personal" business but we are at that point where we could take the next step to be much larger. However, this would make it more challenging for me to continue as an athlete, which is why I originally started the company. With all that said, it is extremely rewarding to work with clients and see the excitement they have when getting back into action using our equipment — especially when I get to gear up right alongside them!
