Our Small Business Snapshot series features photos that represent, in just one image, what the small businesses we feature are all about. Cindy Jones, owner and formulator of Colorado Aromatics, a business founded in 2009 that creates and sells natural skin care products made with farm-grown herbs, explains how this image represents her business.
The quality of Colorado Aromatics skin care products begins on the farm. The herbs we grow are an inspiration for the products, and we use the herbs grown on our farm in all of our products. They contribute antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents to the product to help repair skin damage.
Many times customers and friends ask to come to the farm, and throughout the summer we allow people to volunteer for a few hours. But this time I invited some customers and estheticians to the farm just to see what we grow and how we grow things. This photo shows me giving a farm tour while harvesting calendula; an herb that goes into many of our products.
The name of our farm and skin care line, Colorado Aromatics, came about because we grow many aromatic herbs on the farm including lavender, lemon balm, mint and tulsi. We distill these herbs to obtain their aromatic waters to use both as an ingredient in products and as a product itself, as hair, face, and body sprays for hydration. Other herbs are extracted in oil, alcohol or water after they dry in our herb hut.
Other days are spent at the lab doing both production and development. The lab and store is a short drive from our farm. It allows us to have a large work space and a storefront where we can welcome customers.
My business grew out of a hobby. I loved growing herbs and making products. I soon realized that due to my chemistry background I was able to formulate a very sophisticated and high quality product, and began experimenting with ingredients and products that could help my own skin. Colorado climate is rough on skin and I have always liked to be outside. I knew I was not the only person who needed a skin care line that could handle an outdoor lifestyle.
I love working in the lab and experimenting with ingredients. Marketing and sales, or getting my message out there to a wider audience is a big challenge for me. I find myself spending a lot of time online seeking out wholesale accounts, doing social media and PR work.
