Our Small Business Snapshot series features photos that represent, in just one image, what the small businesses we feature are all about. Lizzy Shaw, owner and designer of Lizzy Shaw Studio, a business founded in 2015 that designs and sells hand-made jewelry and home goods, explains how this image represents her business.
This photograph gives a tiny glimpse of the variety of different semiprecious stones and pearls I use in making the jewelry for the Lizzy Shaw Studio line. I am constantly adding new stones, shapes and designs to the line, and everything is hand-made in Los Angeles.
I was inspired to start making jewelry by my late mother, who was also a jewelry designer. I have always been an artist and designer my whole life — stationery, pillows and other home accents, accessories and now jewelry and cashmere sachets. I have been privately designing for many years. In the last few months, I’ve been getting a lot of attention from stores, websites, costume designers, stylists and celebrities, so, as the holidays were rapidly approaching it seemed like the right time to build my website and publicly launch Lizzy Shaw Studio.
My biggest challenges are getting the word out to customers across the United States through press, publicity and word of mouth; getting people to shop on the website; and finding the best, most reliable suppliers and sources for the gems, pearls and findings I use.
An interesting thing about my business is that in the descriptions of each piece of jewelry, I make sure to give information about the stones, including the history, uses and properties of each stone. This includes health benefits of the stones, or whether they are believed to attract things like love, money, or whatever else people are looking for, so customers can make the best decisions about which piece to buy for themselves or to give as a gift.
