Acer's Aspire Switch 10 E is an impressively long-lasting notebook for mobile pros. In fact, no other budget-priced hybrid laptop we've tested has lasted as long as this one on a charge. But the Switch 10 E's detachable 10-inch display is its real trademark feature, giving you the option to leave the keyboard behind whenever you don't need it. And at just $349, the Aspire Switch 10 E is a pretty affordable option for budget-minded business users.
For that price you get a solid hybrid laptop with few real weaknesses, even if it doesn't excel in any particular area. The 1280 x 800-pixel tablet display could be sharper and brighter, but it's fine for daily work tasks. The machine is also reasonably fast, with a zippy quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM that allowed me to edit documents and spreadsheets, browse the Web and engage in moderate multitasking without any slowdown.
The Switch 10 E's keyboard dock isn't bad, even if its individual keys are a bit on the small side and aren't as deep as I'd like. They make up for that by offering a good amount of feedback, making for an overall satisfying typing experience.
The tablet display detaches from the magnetic keyboard dock with a quick pull upward, which is handy for using touch-screen apps. I also like that the tablet can be attached to the keyboard in a backward orientation, which is nice for presentations or using the touch screen in cramped quarters, such as on an airplane tray table.
Where the Switch 10 E really shined, though, was on our battery life test. It ran for 8 hours and 28 minutes, which is about 2 hours longer than the budget 2-in-1 average of 6 hours and 26 minutes. That's a big perk if you need a mobile work machine that can last through the longest business flights.
