HP Elitebook Folio 1020: Is It Good for Business?

HP's family of Elitebook notebooks has a new addition: the Elitebook Folio 1020, a high-performance, business-class laptop that lives up to the reputation of the Elitebook's ultra-slim and super-durable line of notebooks.

Featuring a 12.5-inch (31.8 centimeters) display with up to 2560 x 1440 resolution, the HP Elitebook Folio 1020 offers ultraportability, business-class power and superior security for all your business needs.

Read on to find out what makes the HP Elitebook Folio 1020 a great choice as your next business notebook. [Best Laptop/Tablet (2-in-1) Hybrids for Business: 2014]

The Elitebook Folio 1020 isn't just slim and lightweight; it's also super durable, making it one of the most portable notebooks available for business users.

HP calls the Elitebook Folio 1020 the "world's thinnest and lightest" business-class notebook. And for good reason: Measuring 12.2 x 8.27 x 0.62 and weighing just 2.2 lbs., the Elitebook Folio 1020 is thinner and lighter than Apple's 13-inch (33 cm) MacBook Air, which indeed makes the Folio the slimmest and lightest notebook around.

It's also one of the sturdiest notebooks you'll find. Its military-standard durability (MIL-STD-810G) has passed rigorous testing, surviving everything from drops, shock and vibration to humidity, pressure and extreme temperatures. So you can rest assured your device will last, wherever you go.

Business-class power

Equipped with Intel's new Core M processor with 8GB of RAM, the Elitebook Folio 1020 is a business user's best friend when getting work done. It can meet all of your business computing demands, from running power-heavy business apps to almost limitless multitasking, so you can stay productive without worrying about any slowdown.

In a test by our sister site Laptop Mag, the Elitebook Folio 1020 could simultaneously browse dozens of Chrome and Internet Explorer tabs, while streaming Netflix and running a full-system scan, without any hitches or lags. Other benchmark tests also revealed the Elitebook Folio 1020 to be a clear winner, as it surpassed the average and most popular notebooks in task-specific speed tests.

To support this much high-power performance, however, you'll need excellent battery life. This is where Elitebook Folio 1020 disappoints. Under Laptop Mag's battery test, which consisted of Web surfing over Wi-Fi, the Elitebook Folio 1020 lasted a mere 6 hours and 49 minutes. Officially, HP claims the device has up to 9 hours of battery life, depending on usage and conditions.

In addition to portability and business-class performance, the Elitebook Folio 1020 also offers business users a number of security features, including:

  • HP Client Security: Keep your Elitebook safe. Encrypt hard drives, manage user access to drives and ports, and securely store passwords — all in one place.
  • Absolute Data Protect: Find stolen or missing devices, then remotely lock them or delete data. The Folio also comes with Sure Start, HP's recovery tool, which can restore devices' Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) after a malware attack. (The BIOS boots system memory, processors, internal drives, chipsets and other hardware.)
  • Fingerprint Reader: Lock, unlock and secure your device, files and passwords using the fingerprint reader under the keyboard. Just scan your finger and forget about easily stolen PINs and passwords.

The HP Elitebook Folio 1020 starts at $1,199.
