We have tried to do a few things to combat the Black Friday of the big box retailers. First, we call it "Green Friday" to separate us from the chaos that surrounds Black Friday. For the web, we push the fact ... sick of all the chaos Black Friday brings; at Greenshops, we find a way to bring the deals to you in the privacy of your own home. On "Green Friday," shop safely in the store or online.

I'm engaging my customers early with a contest that will encourage them to start coming back to my site every day from now through the holiday season and giving them incentives to tell friends.

I own a home furnishings and gift store in historic Old Town Alexandria, Va. My store is a member of a grassroots retail effort in Old Town called the Old Town Boutique District. We formed three years ago to pool our marketing dollars and resources together to promote Old Town and our stores. A number of us, including my store Red Barn Mercantile, will open at 6 a.m. on Black Friday with big discounts for our independent boutiques. For instance, we will be offering 30 percent off your purchase from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m.; 20 percent off from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. you will get 10 percent off if you show a receipt from one of the other Old Town Boutique District stores.
