Employees who plan to do their holiday shopping from the office will be far from alone.
Nearly half of all workers expect to spend some time in the office this holiday season shopping online, research from CareerBuilder revealed. Sixteen percent of workers plan to squeeze in some holiday online shopping on Cyber Monday.
Shopping from the office is most common in the weeks leading up to Christmas, with 30 percent of employees saying they're most likely to shop from work after Dec. 7, the survey found.
While employers tend to be to be more lenient when it comes to workers using breaks or down time to take care of some online shopping, CareerBuilder's vice president of human resources, Rosemary Haefner, warns workers not to take advantage.
"It is the employee's responsibility to know and adhere to their company's policy regarding Internet usage," Haefner said. "Be aware of how you spend time on the Web, and don't let your holiday shopping get in the way of your productivity."
Those who don't stick to their company's Internet usage policy face some harsh consequences. The study found that a quarter of hiring mangers have fired an employee for using the Internet for non-work related activity, with 7 percent letting someone go for holiday shopping at work.
Haefner reminds workers who use their work computers for social media and personal email to be just as responsible and police themselves when it comes to appropriate usage.
Those who don't could be out of a job. More than 10 percent of the hiring managers surveyed have fired an employee for something they posted on social media, while 11 percent have terminated an employee for sending non-work related emails.
The research was based on surveys of 2,494 U.S. hiring managers and human resource professionals and 3,976 workers.
