Offices are filled with a lot of unhappy employees these days, according to a new poll.
A survey by talent and career management firm Right Management revealed that nearly two-thirds of U.S. and Canadian employees are at least somewhat unsatisfied with their job.
The study found just 19 percent of workers are content in their current position.
Michael Haid, a senior vice president for Right Management, believes low job satisfaction is not conducive to strong work performance.
"Like workplace stress, it may affect everything in the workplace, including engagement, productivity and even recruitment and retention," Haid said. "While employers to some extent are dependent on macroeconomic trends, there are steps that may be taken to boost job satisfaction."
Haid said based on prior research, the most effective tool available to management is encouraging employees to take ownership of their own development. He said a good first step is for immediate supervisors to initiate a discussion about career development.
"Employees may feel stuck, but this shouldn’t mean they can’t grow," he said. "Workers need continuing development opportunities to do their job well and to broaden their own capabilities."
The study was based on surveys of more than 400 employees in the U.S. and Canada.
