Cities With the Most Tax Procrastinators

The "City by the Bay" beat out the "City that Never Sleeps" to take home the dubious title of being the biggest tax procrastinator during the past year.  According to the TurboTax list of America’s top procrastinators, 40 percent of San Franciscans waited until the last minute to file their taxes in 2011, helping to jump the city five spots from 2010. San Francisco was one of three California cities ranked in the top 10.

New York was not far behind San Francisco, with 38 percent of Big Apple residents waiting until the last minute to file their 2011 tax return.  Both cities were well above the national average for late filers, which stood at 28 percent. Washington, D.C.; Los Angeles; and Seattle rounded out the top five procrastinators. Other cities included:

The list is based on the number of tax returns filed online between April 1, 2011, and April 18, 2011.
